TRUMP’S HIGHER ED GOALS
The White House recently released President Trump’s plans for the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. They include plans to simplify student loan repayment, “reinstitute limits” on Parent and Grad PLUS loan programs, expand Pell Grants, and encourage “responsible borrowing.”

Yesterday, March 18, the White House released additional materials detailing President Trump’s budget proposal.

Sen. Inhofe on the Defense Budget
Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Jim Inhofe (R-OK) sent a formal letter to Budget Committee leadership asking them to ensure defense numbers reach $750 billion and to strike a budget caps deal soon.

Secretary DeVos to Testify on Ed. Budget
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will testify before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies on the Department of Education’s budget request for FY20. Her hearing is set for 10:15am March 26.

ED. DEPT. TO ENFORCE BAN ON MANDATORY ARBITRATION
Friday, March, 15, the Department of Education announced that it will enforce an Obama-era ban on mandatory arbitration. The Department tried to end the policy but lost in a court case last fall. In addition to other elements, the rules say that colleges and universities cannot require students sign away their legal right to band together in class action lawsuits against their school in claims relating to federal student loans such as fraud or misrepresentation.

Innovations in Healthcare, a non-profit started by Duke Health, McKinsey & Company and the World Economic Forum, held their annual forum in D.C. from March 18 to 19.
