WHITE HOUSE NATIONAL QUANTUM OFFICE
Monday, March, 4, the White House officially set up its National Quantum Coordination Office to encourage and coordinate federal agencies’ research and development into quantum information sciences.

According to Politico, “the National Quantum Initiative Act, which President Donald Trump signed in December, mandated the creation of the office. It will also discuss quantum efforts with industry and academic bodies and grant them access to government research labs and other resources.”

DEVOS APPOINTS FINANCIAL AID CHIEF
Monday, March 4, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos appointed Mark Brown to be the chief operating officer of Federal Student Aid.

DUDDY SPEAKS TO STAFF ABOUT VENEZUELA
Friday, March 1, former Ambassador and visiting professor in the Office of Global Strategy and Programs at Duke University Patrick Duddy spoke with Congressional staff on the crisis in Venezuela and the long history that has led to it.

DUKE ENDOWMENT $50 MILLION GIFT FOR BASIC SCIENCES
A $50 million grant from the Duke Endowment will accelerate and expand the recruitment of research scientists who specialize in the applied and basic sciences at Duke University.”

NC 9TH ELECTION DO-OVER
The primary in North Carolina’s 9th District, which will be open to new candidates, will be held on May 14. The general election is scheduled for Sept. 10.

WHEELER TO RUN EPA
Thursday, Feb. 28, the Senate confirmed Andrew Wheeler as EPA Administrator. Wheeler has held the role in an acting capacity since this summer when President Trump’s original pick Scott Pruitt resigned.


TRUMP FLOATS EXECUTIVE ORDER ON CAMPUS FREE SPEECH
At the annual Conservative Political Action Conference this past weekend, President Trump floated the idea of an executive order requiring colleges to “support free speech… if they want federal research dollars.”
